The study of medicine is one of the most eminent careers to choose from in India, and the number has only been growing over the years. In recent times, a trend that has been gaining a lot of traction is for students to pursue MBBS abroad. The major contributing factors to this shift have been the limited number of seats available in medical colleges and the exorbitant tuition fees levied by private medical colleges.
According to the stats given out by the Medical Council of India (MCI) in 2021, there are a total of 542 government and private colleges that add up to 79,855 seats for students who have cleared the mandatory National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). The number of seats offered by the MCI is highly limited in comparison to the number of students applying for the exam. In the year 2020 itself, an estimated 15 lakh students registered for the NEET-UG program. Private institutions become a feasible option only for those who are able to pay the hefty tuition fees to make the cut.
Under such circumstances, Indian students are forced to look for alternatives outside of India. This guarantees them better exposure, infrastructure, and advanced technology, all at a par with the fees that they are paying in India for the duration of 5–6 years of the course. Countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Russia, France, and Ukraine are among the most popular destinations for Indian MBBS students.
To further make it easier for students to enroll for MBBS abroad, there is no requirement to clear any competitive entrance exam. Here is a list of all that’s required for students to submit and fill out before applying to any foreign university for their MBBS degree.
Age requirements
The applicant is expected to complete 17 years of age as on December 31st of the year for which he is submitting the application. There is no upper limit to applying for the MBBS course abroad
- Academic requirement
- Students must have completed their 10+2 from a recognized board.
- The student must have an aggregate percentage of at least 50% or above in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, with English as the compulsory language preference.
- Students are required to qualify for the NEET (National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test) even if they are planning to pursue MBBS outside India. This is a mandatory criterion.
- The candidate is also required to produce an eligibility certificate from the Medical Council of India during their admission to foreign universities.
Medical requirement
The applicant is required to produce a medical certificate to state that he/she is not suffering from any contagious diseases.

Once the documents are submitted successfully, along with the details of the candidate’s personal and fees related information, he/she can apply for a student’s visa in the respective countries they’re interested in.
